Ratings and Reviews on Different Kinds of Popular Dog Foods

What type of dog food should I feed my dog? It’s a question that few dog owners give much thought to until they’re standing in the dog food aisle at their local pet store.

Although many don’t consider what food to feed their dog in advance, there is no question that dog owners are willing to spend on quality dog products to keep their furry friends happy and healthy for life. In fact, global pet products and services passed $100 billion for the first time in 2016.

With so many dog food brands on the market, it can be difficult to decide which one is best for your dog. To help you narrow down your search, here are the ratings and reviews for a few popular dog food brands:

Canidae

Rating: 4.5/5

Canidae Grain-Free Pure dry dog food uses natural ingredients that are rich in healthy fats, fiber, protein, and chelated minerals that are good for your pup. It is considered an above-average dog food that gets rave reviews from Consumer Affairs. Just note that it is higher calorie and better suited for dogs that get plenty of exercise.

Blue Buffalo

Rating: 2.5/5

You will find mixed opinions on Blue Buffalo. While there are some healthy ingredients in their recipes (flaxseed, peas, etc.), Blue Buffalo also has its share of controversial ingredients as well. This includes canola oil, which is made from rapeseed (a GMO raw material), and caramel, which is used to add coloring to the dog’s food.

It also doesn’t help that Blue Buffalo had two recalls in March for one of its canned product lines.

Hill’s Science Diet

Rating: 3/5

You will often see Hill’s dog food on the shelves of veterinary offices, but this doesn’t mean that your local veterinarian feeds their own dog Hill’s Science Diet. It may be prescribed for dogs with certain ailments, but every owner should be aware that Hill’s does have a partnership with many veterinarians that may make some uncomfortable.

This isn’t to say that your dog can’t do well on Hill’s. It is considered an average dog food with some quality ingredients, but many are turned off by ingredients such as wheat and corn.

Orijen

Rating: 5/5

Orijen is one of the highest quality dog foods on the market today and its price reflects that. If you can afford to feed your pup Orijen, then they will get plenty of healthy ingredients such as deboned chicken or turkey, flounder, mackeral, whole eggs, chicken hearts, and more.

Although it is enthusiastically recommended by many, remember that not every dog will respond to food the same way.

Purina Dog Chow

Rating: 1/5

Purina can be found at grocery stores, which many know isn’t a good sign of a quality dog food. The ingredients confirm this, with corn listed as the first ingredient and meat and bone meal listed as the second.

What’s worse is that the source of the meat is anonymous and it is anyone’s guess as to what the meat actually contains. It could come from cattle, pigs, goats—anywhere. This lack of transparency is troubling and Purina isn’t generally recommended for your dog.

Evo

Rating: 5 Stars

Evo dry dog food is considered a high-quality dog food and is full of good nutrients for your dog. The first two ingredients are turkey and chicken, two quality sources of protein. The rest of the recipe contains nutrient-rich ingredients including apple, peas, chicken fat, and inulin—a natural source of soluble fiber. Although it is higher-priced, you get what you pay for with this brand.

Always Do Your Research!

It’s always a good idea to read ratings and reviews before you purchase anything for your dog, whether it is a specific type of dog food or a safety product such as a LED dog collar or a dog seat belt. If it impacts your dog’s health and well-being in any way, doing research in advance is recommended to ensure that Fido is healthy and happy for life!
