A Doberman Pinscher named Khan saves baby from deadly snake attack

In 2007 a Doberman Pinscher named Khan was rescued from an animal shelter. Just four days later he would save his new owner’s baby girl from a deadly snake attack.
On the day of the incident, seventeen-month-old Charlotte Svillcic was playing in the garden of her home in Atherton, Australia.

At first Khan began acting strangely, it seemed as if he was being slightly aggressive towards Charlotte, attempting to push her away from where she played.

The fact was, Khan had spotted a King Brown snake, the world’s third most venomous snake and he was trying to nudge her to safety.

As the snake was about to strike the baby girl, Khan did the most heroic thing.

Charlotte’s mother Catherine takes up the story, “if I had not seen it with my own eyes I would never have believed it,” she said. “Khan was really concentrating, he kept trying to nudge her but it wasn’t working, so he grabbed her by the back of the nappy and threw her over his shoulder more than a meter.”

With baby Charlotte clear, Khan ended up taking a venomous bite to the paw himself.

“Charlotte looked pretty shocked and Khan screamed, like he’d been stabbed,” said Catherine. “I realised quickly it was a snake and Khan had been trying to get in between her and the snake before he threw her.”

After being bitten, Khan ran inside and collapsed. He was given a shot of anti-venom by a vet and spent a night in a lot of pain but managed to survive and eat a large breakfast the next day.

Catherine said that the family was incredibly moved by Khan’s selfless and protective act.

Catherine also explained the condition of Khan when he was rescued by Kerry Kinder (Doberling Boarding Kennels owner). He was starving, had broken ribs and had been beaten.

“He was an abused dog. It was borderline on whether or not he should be put down because he was in such a bad way,” she said.

In contrast to the treatment Khan endured before his rescue, Catherine said he would spend the rest of his life in luxury.

“If Khan wants a gold bowl, Khan gets it. We owe him for the rest of his life.”

An Atherton snake expert told local press that Khan may have escaped death because the snake was not able to inject a large amount of venom into his paw. The story would have been very different had the bite pierced the skin of little Charlotte.

The dog who had been unwanted just a week before was now “Khan the Wonder Dog” to his owners. They knew for certain he had saved their daughter’s life by risking his own.

I read this amazing story and cried. My husband and I have owned 2 Dobermans and they are amazing animals!!! They are loyal family members!! They are very protective especially when it comes to children. We just lost our girl Hailey in May she was 12. We had our other girl Sissy for 14 yrs. This breed is so misunderstood. I’m so glad Khan survived and your daughter wasn’t harmed. This just proves the Love of a Doberman and the bond they have. So glad you rescued him!!!!

A Doberman is big enough to do as the lady said, and smart enough,
Who ever says those dogs can’t think
    Doesn’t know much

Khan is indead a hero.! Stories can be deliberately misleading though…making out due to breed and thr fact Khan was an abused dog thay he could be dangerous.. why not just write a straight story and stick with the facts.. Im certainly no expert on Dobermans but know they are loyal and protective..Certainly wonderful this bond with Charlotte after such a short time. This amazing dog was quick to react…i stinct would have kicked in.But to throw Charlotte out of harms way is absolutely amazing..Khan such a brave dog..taking a hit for Charlotte. SOOO happy to hear he will be spoilt the rest of his life….ohh and so it appears the fact that family members were outside wasnt made clear just mother seeing through tbe window so its natural some would assumed child was unattended outside.
